Russian bombers struck militants in Syria on Tuesday from the Hamadan air base in Iran. Earlier this week Russia had sent aircrafts to Iran to expand its campaign in Syria. The strikes were conducted by Sukhoi-34 fighter bombers and Tupolev-22M3 long-range bombers. This is the first time that Russia has carried out an attack from a different nation since announcing its support of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in September. This is also the first time since 1979 that Iran has allowed another country to use its territory for military operations.
